Density-gradient-based imaging forms a core part of compressible flow experimentation and is a key skill required for detailed flow investigations. Despite the improvements in alternative methods, such as PIV, schlieren and it’s derivatives often form the primary method of diagnosing and investigating compressible flows. Improvements in camera technology and image processing have meant that schlieren can be applied and processed to gain ever more information about the flow under investigation; however, the core of the technique still requires that images be taken well. Challenges in setup, complexity, and space have meant that some methods such as background-oriented schlieren (BOS) may be more applicable in certain circumstances.
This two-day workshop will aim to develop the theoretical and practical basis for schlieren, shadowgraph, and BOS with hands on implementation and post-processing.
Target Audience
Suitable for PhD students, PDRAs, and industry practitioners who would like training and information on when to apply which technique, to what, and how. No prior knowledge is assumed of imaging or image processing.
This event is free to attend for academic researchers working at a UK University. The fee for industry and academics from non-UK Universities is £400. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. All attendees are responsible for personal travel expenses and accommodation if required.

Morning sessions – Theoretical framework of imaging and density-based imaging
Afternoon sessions – Hands on implementation in the lab showing schlieren, shadowgraph, BOS

Morning session – post-processing practical
